Tropical Birding

One day trip

After an early start we travel approx 40 kms to PIRANG, a Mandinka village where we stop at a swampy area where rice cultivation takes place during the summer rains. A walk in this area gives us a good chance to spot a good number of birds which should include Crowned Cranes.

Around 11 -11.30 we retrace our steps continuing to our lunch time stop at KULORO CAMP. This area is usually very rewarding for Ornithologists. We stay in the restaurant area until around 4 pm, after which we investigate the locality which consists of cultivated patches with scattered trees interspersed with tall grass, shrubs and wooded stretches.

Birds commonly seen include several hawk and buzzard species along with colourful, showy rollers, woodpeckers, hornbills, bee-eaters and kingfishers.

We depart from this neighbourhood returning to the Hotels no later than 7.30 PM.

NB. Binoculars "Birds of The Gambia and Senegal" Birding Books are available on loan FOC with personal checklists being complimentary.
