A Major Tourism Boom Awaits Gambia

The tiny nation of The Gambia—a popular holiday resort for Western tourists, would soon witnessed a dramatic transformation on its tourism industry policies, with the view of restoring tourists and investors confidence, President Yahya Jammeh has declared.

Mr. Jammeh believes that tourism is an important sector in the nation’s economy, which accounts for the greater percentage of Gambia’s Gross Domestic Product—known as (GDP). Mr. Jammeh opined that such an important sector needs to be given the attention it deserved in the interest fulfilling the nation’s economic agenda—which is to transform the mini West African state into an economic power in the region.

Delegates who attended the 35th Annual Congress of the African TravelAssociation (ATA) say they appreciate The Gambia as a great potentialfor harnessing the 'untapped' tourism market in the continent, PANAreported from here Thursday.

They said that they had learnt great lessons from The Gambianexperience and believed that the country could be a model for theAfrica's tourism industry with specific regards to the development paceof the industry.

"The Gambia is situated in a strategic positionand has a great potential for the sustainability of the tourismmarket," they said, nothing that the traditional and cultural heritagein the West African country painted a mental picture of "the norms andvalues of our great ancestors".

The delegates were taken on aconducted tour, organized by The Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA), tohistorical sites like the James Island and Juffureh (a designatedUNESCO World Heritage Site) which was the base for the transportationof slaves from The Gambia, across the Atlantic Ocean to the New Worldof the Americas.

They also visited the Eco Tourism Centres atthe GIG Farm, Mama Africa Museum Centre in Brufut and the President'sVillage of Kanilai , which has been transformed into a culturalstronghold by The Gambian leader.

Kanilai is known for hosting the country's biggest annual cultural jamboree, the Kanilai Cultural Festival.

Havingseen just a few tourist centres, Mr. Ogo Sow, the first AfricanImmigrant and Expatriate to start a Radio Programme in the UnitedStates and Canada, aimed at promoting African tradition and positiveimage, said the delegates had a lot to learn from The Gambia.

Mr.Sow, fondly called Mr. Africa in America, said The Gambia was a realtourist destination and served as a role model for tourismsustainability and development in Africa.

Kanili Festival Kicks Off!

In a brief chat with Entertainment recently at the National Centre for Arts and Culture, Mr. Cornelius Gomez, director of Literature, Performing and Fine Arts, said this festival has been created by the president since 2001 and is the fifth. He added that this has been established and has created more awareness for African people and also play a higher role in national development.

Director Gomez explained that coming up with this kind of festival is the biggest not only involving Gambians but as well as the Diaspora to come together and renew our African culture. It is going to be a very big festival because is going to include both Latin America, Europe as well as other countries. The origin of the name baobab is uncertain. Some have suggested that it comes from "bu hobab," a name used for the plant in the markets of Cairo. Or perhaps it was derived from "bu hibab," an Arabic designation for "the fruit with many seeds." The trees are related to the kapok and the balsa. There are 6 species of baobab trees in Madagascar, 1 in Africa and 2 elsewhere (including Australia and Vietnam). The baobab trees (called renala by inhabitants of Madagascar) are present almost everywhere on the island, except in the highlands and rain forest. They are most prevalent in the dry savannah of the West.

For centuries, much of what was known about baobabs was based exclusively on the African baobab (A digitata). The first recorded reference was by 14th-century Arab traveller Ibn Batuta who mentions the water-storage capacity of its massive trunk. In 1661 the writer Flacourt praised the giants - speaking about the area of Morondava, he wrote: "It is in this region that exists a tree named Anadzahé, which is monstrously stupendously large. It is hollow inside and 12 feet in diameter, round, ending in an archway like the bottom of a lamp. There are only a few small branches here and there on top. The tree is a wonder to be seen."
Sometimes called the "upside-down tree" because of their unusual root-like branch formations, baobabs are extremely long-lived. Some specimens are believed to be more than 5,000 years old. (Two trees on an island off Cape Verde were estimated to be over 5,000 years old.

Girth measurements themselves are not reliable estimates of a particular tree's age, as the conditions under which it has grown - and the climatic fluctuations of the centuries - strongly affect them - some years, they can decrease in size. There is no such thing as a "typical" baobab. Inside its shell, the tree's fruit contains a number of seeds, embedded in a whitish, powdery pulp. Tangy and exceedingly nutritious, the pulp makes a tasty food or, after soaking in water or milk, a refreshing beverage (with 6 times the vitamin C content of an orange). Fermented, it makes a traditional brew.

The seeds may be eaten raw or roasted. They yield an edible oil which is used for cooking and exported for use in cosmetics. The leaves, similar to spinach, are eaten as a relish, especially in times of drought and are considered medicinal - they reduce fever and diarrhœa. The pollen of the African and Australian baobabs is mixed with water to make glue.

The wood has a moisture content of 40%, making it unusuable as timber (which is lucky for the tree because it keeps it from being harvested) but the fibrous bark can be made into baskets, rugs, fishing nets, hats, ropes and the like. The tree seems impervious to having its bark stripped.

Baobab (called kuka trees in Nigeria) flower for the first time at about 20 years. In mid-summer, dozens of luminous white blossoms - the size of saucers - open at sunset and their strong musky odour attracts fruit bats and hosts of insects. Large bats seek out the generous sweet nectar and collect and distribute pollen as they move from flower to flower.
The life of a flower is short lived and it drops to the ground within hours. The resultant seeds are housed in a hairy pod which resembles a miniature rugby ball (inside of which is a white pulp from which cream of tartar is derived). Once they fall to the ground, the pods are fed upon by baboons, monkeys, antelope and elephants, which serve to disperse the hard seeds within. Humans eat them as well.
Bushbabys, squirrels, rodents, lizards, snakes, tree frogs, spiders, scorpions and insects may live out their entire lives in a single tree. Birds nest in holes in the trunk. The hollow trunks of living trees have served as homes, storage barns, places of refuge or worship, and even as prisons or tombs. One tree near Gravelotte in South Africa's Northern Province was used as a bar where up to a dozen thirsty gold diggers could quench their thirst.
Certain tribes in the Transvaal wash baby boys in water soaked in the bark of a baobab. Then, like the tree, they will grow up mighty and strong. To this day the baobab remains at the centre of black magic rituals on the islands where they are found. Most waganga will take their subjects to a special tree, where they may tie ornaments to the branches to give a spell its power, hammer nails into the trunk to kill devils, or climb and sit in the branches whilst carrying out various ceremonies.
The wood being soft, it is subject to attacks of fungus which destroy its life, and renders the part affected easily hollowed out. This is done by natives, and within these hollows they suspend the dead bodies of those who are refused the honor of burial. There they become mummies - perfectly dry and well preserved - without any further preparation of embalmment.

Death is a low chemical trick played on everybody except baobab trees.

Gambia has a land area of 11, 295 sq km, with a population of 1.5 million. The Gambia has been a holiday destination since the mid 1960s and enjoys a sub-tropical climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons.

Juffureh is a famous attraction site. The setting for Alex Haley's novel Roots, Juffureh is a traditional village, an easy trip from Banjul. It gives visitors an African background and discovery of their roots. At nearby Fort Albreda and Fort James, visitors can see many reminders of colonial history.

Tendaba Camp, 100 miles up-river from Banjul, was the country's first inland hotel, constructed to replicate an African village with traditional huts. The camp is a good starting point for daytrips by boat and for bird-watching.

Another attraction site is the River Gambia National Park about 100 miles east of the Atlantic coast, the vegetation changes from swamps to thick forests, and many islands appear in the river. Five of these form a park known for its chimpanzee-rehabilitation project.

Other exciting activities are Camel rides at Tanji, visits to Abuko Reserve and other nature reserves, lots of places to eat & drink and you can also enjoy fishing and more.

RESORTS AND ACCOMMODATION
There are four main resort areas in what is referred to as the Tourism Development Area - the palm-fringed coastline overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. There are modern hotels of all classes as well as small but comfortable motels and guest houses. Outside this area, there are exotic camps mainly situated on the banks of the beautiful River Gambia.

The Mythical Baobab

Many cultures claim to remember a time when great and ancient trees cloaked vast areas of the earth. The enchanting original forests and foreboding gigantic trees were of mythical dimensions and proportions.

The African baobab is a living embodiment of timeless affinities with nature common to many peoples throughout the continent. It serves as a metaphoric window into Africa's real or imagined past, through which we may view practices said to be of great antiquity.

Visitors to Sukur are warned not to approach a certain ancient baobab tree because, villagers say, it turns people into hermaphrodites.
Several myths that use the baobab as a backdrop for teaching moral lessons are told by the Bushmen or Hausa people of Northern Nigeria. One tale involving the baobab which is used to explain a phenomenon of nature as well as teach a moral lesson is the myth "The Tale of the Superman" In this story a husband boasts to his wife that he is the strongest man alive. He learns of another man who claims to be "superman", and goes to seek him out.

This second "superman" is actually an extremely powerful superhuman who kicks up wind wherever he goes and eats men for dinner. While trying to escape from "superman", the husband comes across the "Giant-of-the-Forest" sitting under a baobab tree. The giant offers to help the husband, and enters into a terrible fight with "superman". In their struggle to free themselves from each other's grasp, they leap to such a height they disappear into the heavens. As a result, their struggle can be heard as thunder.

The moral of the story is summed up by the wife who says, "Never boast about your achievements again. However strong or clever or rich or powerful you are, there is always somebody more so."

The Gambia Top Model of Colour Finale

History in the making hit the shores of Gambia this December for the annual UK modelling competition, Top Model of Colour. After months of regional heats which saw 1,000 the TMC competition saw over 30 models from around the UK being flown into The Gambia for the first time ever, taking the modelling competition into the African continent show outside the UK. TMC is known as being one of the UK's leading modelling competitions for models of colour hoping to enter the competitive industry, made even more so by the lack of models of colour on the international runways during fashion week.

Models from across the UK including London, Birmingham and Manchester flew into The Gambia for the show in addition to a state house visit and meeting with the President of The Gambia, Yahya AJJ Jammeh and photoshoots in choice locations around The Gambia's capital of Banjul.

The evening culminated saw Emmanuel Ogunjinmi and Paula Okunzuwa walk away with the titles of Top Male and Female models of colour after having been judging on a range of abilities including runway walk, physique and understanding of the modelling industry. Industry experts on the judging panel included Arise editor Helen Jennings, leading British fashion entrepreneur Samata Angel and Yemi Adegite, CEO of Glasgow Fashion Week.

Judges for the different heats of the competition, which ran for months up to the finale in Gambia had included international makeup artist Eryca Freemantle, AFUA Acheampong, the acting editor of Black Hair Magazine, who both joined the troupe travelling to The Gambia and top Nigerian model Ibukun Jegede. The winners secured a contract with Mahogany Models which is sure to provide a launch pad for their respective careers within the modelling world. The competition also saw both commercial models and high fashion models given the opportunity to compete on an equal footing, assessing their potential within respective industries. Sola Oyabede, the founder of Mahogany Models and the Top Model of Colour competition is an influential figure within the British modelling industry and has worked tirelessly to secure a place for models of colour within the modelling industry.

It is a good idea to bring along much needed stationery, which you can leave behind at the school. Many others do the same, or you can make a small contribution. We feel providing an education for these children is a very worthwhile cause.

The Gambia’s winter tourist season commences

The Gambia 2009-2010 tourists’ season opened Thursday at the Banjul International Airport with the arrival of the first batch of more than 200 tourists from Sweden and Denmark.

Most holiday makers coming to the Gambia come mainly from the United Kingdom and the Scandinavian countries.

Speaking to journalist shortly after the arrival of the tourists, Morten Evensen, the area manager for Thomas Cook (a tour operator) said even though the world economic crisis will impact negatively on tourism, he was convinced that this year’s tourist season will be slightly better for the Gambia than predictions made by sceptics. He said the Gambia was a cheap destination and that will attract several tourists from Scandinavia.

He revealed that his company plans to bring more than 600 tourists to the Gambia every week. He said the bookings they have for this year’s season were promising.

Lamin Saho, the marketing director at the Gambia Tourism Authority, said they were facing several challenges as a result of the global economic crisis, but he was quick to add that they are now exploring new markets like Russia and Nigeria.

Senegal lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator and enjoys a steady warm year round climate, with a short rainy season between the months of June and September.

As such it provides the perfect weather for a lazy beach holiday, especially in the Saly region just south of Dakar; but Senegal also has three mighty rivers and these provide a good deal of fertile land and some wonderfully intricate coastal lagoons and waterways that are a joy to explore.

And because of this abundance of water and fertility it supports a great wealth of wildlife including numerous birds from coastal waders to large raptors, and various mammal species such as warthogs, hyenas, monkeys, baboons, manatees and dolphins.

CLIMATE

Senegal has marked contrasts in climate. The coastal region, except in Casamance, is equable, with low rainfall and high humidity. Inland, the climate is drier, ranging to the semi-desert of the Sahel region in the east. The wet season is from June to September, rather shorter in the north and longer in the south, especially near the coast.

PEOPLE

The population was estimated in 2002 at about 9,8 millions , of which a quarter live in the agglomeration of Dakar, it is composed of many ethnics.

The Wolofs, are the most represented (35%), they make up the majority in all the regions, especially in the centre, the north and the coast of Dakar and Saint Louis. The farmers and the merchants, of Muslim faith for the majority, there importance is certain in the nations economy. The Lebous, established in fishing communities in the peninsula of Cap-Vert and in Saint Louis are related.

The Pulaar (20%), is composed of the Foulbes, Peuls and Toucouleurs, in the northern Senegal, the Fouta Toro, historical source for the propagation of Islam in Senegal, make up the cultural birthplace, they are very active in the commercial domain, as well as breeding and irrigated farming. they populate the Senegalese river valley and the Ferlo region.

The Sereres (17%) are less scattered out than the other ethnic groups. They can be found in the Sine-Saloum, along the Small Coast, in the centre of countries and north-west of the Gambia. The majority are Muslim, except for those along the Small Coast. The Diolas (10%) can be found in the Casamance, but also in Gambia and the Guinea-Bissau. Oriented rather to the culture of rice, they are for the majority animist and/or Christians in the basse Casamance region (Ziguinchor, Oussouye, Cap Skiring), and musulmans in the north and east.

Other than the main ethnic groups, we find the Mandingues of Eastern Senegal, the Soninkes very present in the east of the country and in the zones adjacent to the Mali and the Mauritania, the Bassari which live mainly by the culture of the millet and corn, of the picking and hunting, between the Guinea border and the limit of the Niokolo-Koba national park.
You may already be a fan of Senegalese music, or you may well already be a fan of Senegalese music without realising it. For a relatively small country they have produced a startling amount of fabulous music, and much that has crossed over the ‘world music’ divide into the consciousness of Western musical audiences.

Naming CeremoniesWood Carvings

These are great lively occasions that are well worth a look if you have the opportunity. This normally takes place one week after the child is born. The elders of the village gather together in the morning and name the baby whilst slaying either a chicken, goat, sheep or cow depending on the wealth of the family. Then the rest of the village is invited to join in and the party continues long into the night. There are displays of dancing and singing and collections for the new baby continue throughout the event - so we recommend that if ever invited you take along plenty of small notes.

Tabaski
Tabaski is probably the most important celebration in the Muslim calendar and is marked by a two-day public holiday. Muslims kill a ram to commemorate when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac in obedience to God.

Ramadan
This is a 30-day festival that takes place each and every year in the ninth month of the lunar calendar. During this period all physically mature and healthy Muslims are obliged to abstain from all food, drink, gum chewing and any kind of tobacco use.

Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. The fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate, and learning to thank and appreciate all of God's bounties.

A few names for you: Youssou N’Dour, Baaba Maal, Orchestra Baobab – and these are just the artists that have made that crossover; you’ll find that music is such a presence in Senegal, and such a crucial part of the very fabric of life that it will form a soundtrack to your holiday, a soundtrack for your memories.

The Bandia Nature Reserve
Is a small but perfectly formed game reserve, situated 40 miles from Dakar near Saly and M’bour.

You can enter the reserve either in your own car or in one of the Reserve’s 4WD vehicles and hire the services of one of the skilled guides to see some typical African savannah animals: Giraffe, White Rhino, Zebra, Roan Antelope, Waterbuck, Kudu, Oryx, Impala, Cape Eland, Lord Derby Eland, Kob Antelope, West African Forest Buffalo, Wart Hog, Crocodiles, Green Vervet Monkeys and Patas Monkeys.

Dakar
Is the capital of Senegal, located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, on the country's Atlantic coast. It is Senegal's largest city. Its position, on the western edge of Africa, is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port.

Kermel Market
Many women go to the colourful Kermel Market to sell a variety of flowers: marigolds, zinnias and sunflowers. The flowers are primarily for western tourists. At Kermel Market, a hot spot for foreign visitors from the West and Asia, vendors have been selling their goods since the beginning of the twentieth century.

Lac Rose
Lac Rose (The Pink Lake) surrounded by dunes, is a large shallow lagoon 10 times saltier than the ocean and is renowned for its pink hue when the sun is high. The colour is due to a high concentration of minerals in the water. Senegal’s answer to the Dead Sea, you can swim here or effortlessly float on the surface. There is a small-scale salt-collecting industry on the southern side of the lake which is also worth a visit.

Marche Sandanga

The Marche Sandanga (Sandanga Market) is a labrynth of stalls selling anything from Senegalese music casettes to freshly plucked chickens. You can buy just about anything here, although don’t expect too many souvenir stalls. Colourful and vibrant cloth and clothing are a major attraction of this traditional market, drawing in many visitors.

Palais Présidential
The Palais Présidentiel (Presidential Palace) is a white building dating back to 1906 and encompassing strikingly lovely gardens. Guards in their Presidential uniforms guard the outside and pose with tourists for pictures.

Village Artisanal
One of the most popular places for buying souvenirs is the government-sponsored Village Artisanal (Village of Traditional Handicrafts), near the fishing beach of Soumbédioune. You'll find a tremendous display of wooden carvings, metal work, gold and silver jewellery, ivory, tablecloths, blankets, leather goods and clothing, but a lot of the goods are turned around very quickly and you have to search hard for good-quality pieces.

GOREE ISLAND
To the east of Dakar, about 3km offshore, is Île de Gorée, one of the earliest European settlements along this part of coast.

Today is a haven of history and peace within easy reach of Dakar via ferry which departs every two hours during the daylight.

Local Art & Crafts
You will find a variety of traditional vibrant, colourful fabrics and canvasses, together with wooden carvings and instruments on display on the island produced by local artists.

The Old Slave Trading Station
With its colonial brick-structures and sand-blown, bougainvillea-flushed alleyways, this island is a haven of tranquillity. But there's a sad background to all this calm beauty - Île de Gorée used to be an important slave trading station, and many visitors come here for traces of this tragic past. Maison des Esclaves (Slave House) is a museum dedicated to the slave era.

The Fort
The Fort stands as a reminder of the Second World War. Here visitors can see a memorial statue and the original heavy metal war guns, and view a red buoy out in the sea marking where a British ship was sunk by the guns during the war. You can find out more about the effects of the war on Gorée Island by visiting the island’s museum of history. There is also the opportunity to visit a traditional African mosque.

SAINT LOUIS
The Saint Louis region of Senegal sits just off the border with Mauritania.

Famous for its cast iron bridge, put in by French colonialists in the 19th century, it is close to the Djoudj National Park, home to thousands of birds, some indigenous to the area. The city is also famed for its culinary roots, being the home to Senegal's national dish: Ceb-u-djen - rice and fish.

The Governor’s Palace
The Governor’s Palace is an 18th century fort, and now a government building. Place Faidherbe, with its statue of the famous French colonial governor, sits in front of the Governor’s Palace.

Guet N’Dar Fishing Village
In the fishing part of the town, Guet N’Dar, pirogues are lined up on the beach and fish dry on racks by the side of the road. Women boil up fish in vast drums, and the steam mixes odorously with the early morning sea mist. A little further south is the Muslim cemetery, where each fisherman’s grave is covered with a fishing net.

Réserve de Faune de Guembeul
This reserve is small, accessible and easy to explore by foot. It’s about 8 miles south of St Louis. The landscape is a mixture of lagoons, mud flats and dry woodland protecting the population of endangered Sahel animals, which include Dama Gazelles, Patas Monkeys and Sulcata Tortoises. There are also many birds around the lagoon – 190 species have been spotted here – and there are plans to introduce other Sahel mammals into the reserve.

Ebony is an exceptionally hard and beautiful wood found only in the Sahara desert regions of Africa. Its exceptional density makes it not only very heavy, but also gives it an incomparable sheen when polished. West Africa is home to many master carvers of ebony.

Wasu Stone Circles
An absolute must is to visit these ancient monuments - still one of Africa's greatest enigma. Around 40 stone circles such as these are found in The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea, and still experts do not agree on their origin.

It is belived that they were created by a civilisation maybe 1000 years ago, whose only remains are these circles. Very little is being done to discover the history behind these archaeological finds.

The smaller stones placed atop the monoliths are a much later addition, with visitors are encouraged to place a pebble on the top to "make a wish". Maybe your wish will become true, but be careful what you wish for!

The circles are believed by many to be burial sites, a theory which was enforced with the discovery of early skeltons in the centre of some of the circles, as well as tools and pottery, items which made have been left with the dead to help them on their journey into the afterlife.

There is said to be a curse on anyone who is found disturbing this site, which is not a bad bit of superstition to have in place. In 1931, an arcaeologist and his expedition leader, both died mysetriously following excavations at this site.

Half day trip

An introductory half day trip around Gambia's capital city and surrounding areas to familiarise everyone with the main places to visit.

We start with a visit to the national musuem in Banjul showing the history of The Gambia tracing African Cultural and European colonialism. We then take a short drive through Banjul to "see the sights," stopping to visit the general market with much hustle and bustle and where anything from live Chickens and Vegetables to Herbs and False Hair can be bought. (As with any crowded place, care must be taken with handbags cameras, etc). We also stop by the Main Mosque.

Then to Serre Kunda the most densely populated town in The Gambia, taking us to a display of "Tie Dye" skills and the beautiful Batik cottons, after which we head for Bakau where the first stop will be a local bar where a refresher can be taken at a moderate price, if needed.

This is only a short stop since we continue to the tourist market where a variety of souvenirs can be seen. We are soon away to katchically Crocodile Pool where we may be fortunate enough to see "Charlie" as featured in several British TV Programmes including "Wish You Were Here". Lunch at a Beach Bar.

We return to the hotels around 15:30 hrs.

Bush Tracker's Breakfast

Half day trip

The idea behind this excursion is to give people more insight into the wild animals of the Gambia/Makasutu, allowing more time to track the animals, and explore the forest and habitats within it.

This experience is aimed at people with an interest in wildlife, and is more specialized than the existing day trip.

Arrive at Makasutu "Base Camp" around sunrise for tea/coffee and the dawn chorus from the birds. Small groups (no more than 6 per guide) will set out for the "Big Forest" searching for tracks and spoor, which will then set the direction that the excursion will take.

A deeper knowledge of the habitats and behavior of the animals will be gained, and also a chance to visit the forest at a time when most activity is taking place.

Breakfast will be a true African bush adventure. The guests will be given flat spades (shovels) to cook their own breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausages, and tomatoes over small campfires (Alternatively, the chef can cook this in the Kitchen if some guests wish). After some relaxation a return to the Hotels is organized in plenty of time for lunch.

All over The Gambia you will be approached by friendly children practicing their English. "Hello", "What's your name", "Where are you from", "Your first time in Gambia", "How you like my country?" "I give you my address, you send me gift" so on and so forth.

If you have the time chatting with the the children is fine, it is nice to be friendly, but saying a firm no when it came to exchanging addresses and giving presents. Most will accept this and still carry on chatting for the fun of it, but some are persistent in which case you should dis-engage.

The alternative is to either totally ignore these children, which would be a shame as an interaction with them can enrich your experience of the Gambia.

Gambia To Host Africa’s World Tourism Congress

The Republic of Gambia will host the Africa Tourist Association’s(ATA) 35th Annual Congress in its capital city of Banjul in May 2010.“It is with great pride that we are once again partnering with ATA toinvite the world to visit and explore The Gambia,” said Gambia’sMinister of Tourism and Culture, the Honorable Nancy Seedy Njie. “TheGambian government places great priority on tourism, which hascontributed significantly to our country’s growth and stability. Wehope that the ATA Congress will help us continue to promote our countryin new marketplaces and attract new investment in the sector.”

The Gambia, known as the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” is situated onthe West side of the continent. It is the smallest African country onthe mainland, and shares borders with Senegal to the north, east, andsouth. Comparatively, the Gambia is slightly smaller than the island ofJamaica, and less than twice the size of Delaware. It is known for manyluxurious beach resorts, quaint fishing villages and magnificentcoastline.

The nation bills itself as an “affordable and safe westAfrican country, which includes peaceful and friendly people,eco-tourism, sports fishing, bird watching and safaris, music, dancingand traditional wrestling matches, and the opportunity to visittrans-Atlantic slave trade sites.”

The ATA’s congress in Gambia will be attended by African tourismministers and industry experts representing tourism boards, travelagencies, ground operator companies, airlines, and hotels, includingparticipants from the travel trade media and the corporate, non profit,and academic sectors.

The four-day event will focus on engagingdelegates in discussions on a range of industry topics, such as“public-private sector partnership, marketing and promotion, tourisminfrastructure development, industry trends, and social media.”

Among other events planned are a networking reception for youngprofessionals in the tourism industry, and a marketplace for buyers andsellers specializing in Destination Africa to interact and do business.Delegates to the Congress are invited to explore Gambia prior or afterthe ATA event, all aimed at experiencing the opportunities that thecountry has to offer.

Approximately 120,000 charter tourists, mainly from Europe, arriveannually to the Gambia. Its tourism Ministry plans to attract 500,000arrivals by 2012, by targeting the United States and the luxury tourismmarket, and by lengthening the tourist season to all-year round. Boththe public and private sectors are working to increase itsaccommodation stock, and currently, a new conference center is beingbuilt.

The Gambia has a population of approximately 1,782,893 people. Ithas a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of approximately $2.264 billion, ofwhich the travel and tourism economy account for 16%. Its form ofgovernment is that of a Republic.

While Gambians are free to practice whatever religion they choose,most are Muslins (90%), Christians (8%), and others (2%). The officiallanguage of the country is English.

After a stop at a Gambian Art Gallery for drinks and snacks we proceed to the peaceful Kartong beach where a traditional West African river craft is waiting to take us for a cruise around various inlets and islands of the Allahein River.

The scenery varies from mangroves to open mud flats and fascinating banks of oyster shells. Here you will have a good chance of spotting monkeys and some of the varied birdlife of this part of the country. Local fishermen can often be seen digging for mussels in the mud or collecting oysters from the mangroves.

After about two hours cruising in and out of we proceed for lunch and relaxation.

Seven or eight day trip

DAY 1 DAKAR/GOREE ISLAND
We start around 09:00 on our tour of DAKAR the Capital of Senegal with over 2 Million inhabitants. This was established in 1857 and is the oldest European style City in West Africa. We visit Independence Square, pass by the Presidential Palace, The National Assembly. The Cathedral, Grand Mosque, Museum and several markets including Karmel Market famous for its women flower sellers.

We continue to ILE DE GOREE first settled by European merchant adventurers in the fifteenth century. We take the 20-minute ferry ride and after lunch we take the time to visit the main parts of the island, which was the center of the slave trade from this part of West Africa for 300 years. We take in the well-preserved Traders‘ House, where the "Door of No Return" shows us where the hapless Africans left their beloved continent for an uncertain and unknown future. The church of St Charles de Boramee, The Museum and other interesting places of this UNESCO World Heritage site are also included. The visit, although left largely to the individual’s imagination, is a mournful and humbling experience. We return to Dakar for Dinner and overnight. (100km)

DAY 2 ST LOUIS
After breakfast we head north to the main northern town of Senegal and the former Capital city of Senegal. Lunch is taken in the city and the afternoon tour covers yet another World Heritage Site. Dinner and overnight in St Louis. (278km)

DAY 3 TOUBA/KAOLACK
We head south to the Holy City of TOUBA where the seat of the Muslim Brotherhood called "The Mourides" is situated. The most beautiful mosque in all West Africa, built over the tomb of the founder of Mouridism is generally accepted as the largest and one of the finest in West Africa. It is the most important religious Shrine in Senegal. We continue further to Kaolack, the administrative capital of the Saloum Region of Senegal. Dinner and overnight in Kaolack. (313 km)

DAY 4 SALOUM DELTA
After breakfast we take the opportunity for a trip around the town of Kaolack by horse and cart, the age-old means of transport in this part of Africa. We take an early lunch and continue West towards the Sine Saloum National Park. After checking in at the comfortable hotel built on the edge of the park we take a 3-4 hours trip by boat to SIPO ISLAND to experience the everyday life of a fishing village, Wildlife and birds are all around, but as with all things of nature, we will need to be quick to spot them. We may even have the opportunity to spot the elusive Manatee, that is reputed to inhabit this area. Dinner and overnight at the Saloum Hotel. (40 km)

DAY 5 SALOUM NATIONAL PARK
Today we start early and take a pirogue (West African rivercraft) ride through the waterways along the western side of the National Park. The fantastic birdlife of the Delta being all around. Lunch is followed by an afternoon of relaxation at our overnight Hotel on the northern side.

DAY 6 SALY PORTUGAL
We continue north and take the ferry at Foundiangne to the Pink Lake (Lac Rose), which has a high salt content. Here we take lunch and a 4x 4 excursion, when it is possible to see the village women working at the extraction of the salt. Dinner and overnight is in the SALY PORTUGAL area. (150 km)

DAY 7 DAKAR
After a relaxing morning and lunch at the Hotel we make our way north to our DAKAR Hotel. Dinner will be at a typical Senegalese Restaurant for the last night. (100 km)

Optional (can be added to the tour when original Day 4 becomes Day 9) – only available November – June due to Niokolokoba Wildlife Park Closure.

DAY 4 NIOKOLOKOBA WILDLIFE PARK

We head towards NIOKOLOKOBA WILDLIFE PARK, and with breakfast on the way, stopping at one or two Mandinka villages, we arrive at Hotel Simenti, within the park itself, in time for a late lunch when some of the exotic birdlife can be experienced from the terrace overlooking the bend of the RIVER GAMBIA where the animals come to drink at dawn and dusk.

Our first Park safari starts around 4 pm when we further discover the "Nature of the Park". Niokolokoba does not teem with the variety of wildlife found in East Africa but Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Leopards, Jackals, Antelopes, Hippos, Crocodiles, Waterbuck, Monkeys, Baboons, Chimpanzees, and many other Mammals, Animals, Snakes, Lizards etc are to be found in this 800,000 hectare Wildlife Park.

300 – 350 different species of Birds can be found with 120 species being seen in one day. We take our time with stops as necessary and spend 2 – 3 hours to obtain the maximum benefit. Dinner and overnight is at Simenti Hotel inside the Park. (408 km)

DAY 5 KEDOUGOU
A very early breakfast allows us to join our second safari this time at dawn, in a different area of the park to allow sightings of as many varieties of animals and birds as possible. We return to the hotel in time for an early lunch after which we head east along the edge of NIOKOLOKOBA PARK on our way to KEDOUGOU a town in the remote South East extremity of Senegal close to the borders with Mali and Guinea Conakry which is infrequently visited by tourists. This is the BASSARI country and is the least known part of Senegal, ethnically diverse and very different from the surrounding areas.

The ancient BASSARI people, whose origins are lost in the mists of time and who live in hill villages around the FOUTA DJALON mountains, have resisted the Islamic and Christian religions that have attempted to convert them over the centuries. The main occupations are agriculture and hunting, with the odd gold panning thrown in for good measure. The BASSARI and BIDEK people are a race apart from their neighbours and whose lifestyle has not changed in literally thousands of years. They live to exist, but are some of the happiest and hospitable people that you may meet. Our overnight is in a simple African style hotel on the bank of the River Gambia. (150 km)

DAY 6 KEDOUGOU
We spend the full day exploring this area in 4WD vehicles and visiting a couple of the remote hill villages, where we may be very fortunate enough to witness an unexpected ancient ceremony. Overnight again at Kedougou. (100km)

DAY 7 JANJANGBUREH
We regretfully leave this fascinating area and retrace our steps along the edge of NIOKOLOKOBA PARK, where we may be fortunate enough to see some of the many varied animals. Stopping on the way for our picnic lunch we pass through TAMBAKOUNDA and take the Gambian road to the Administrative Regional Capital of JANJANGBUREH stopping at various points of interest on the way. From the South Bank of the River we travel by ferry to JANJANGBUREH ISLAND and to our overnight camp, which is basic but comfortable and beautifully situated on the River bank. (290 km)

DAY 8 KAOLACK
At breakfast we are joined on many occasions by monkeys, which always provide a very interesting and exciting start to day. However care should be taken if you decide to feed them. NEVER use the hand. We now head west using the laterite bush roads along the South and North Banks of the River Gambia, passing through several villages on the way, many of which do not see the passing of many tourists. Picnic lunch is taken en route. In the late afternoon we reach the Gambia/Senegal border and after the formalities, we continue into SENEGAL for the overnigt stop at the basic but clean and comfortable air conditioned African Style Hotel of RELAIS DE KAOLACK situated in the capital of the region. Dinner and overnight is at the hotel with possibly some Senegalese Entertainment during the evening. (221 km)

A historic journey 200 years back in time to Alex Haley’s “Roots”.

The trip starts with a long, lazy, two and a half hour cruise from Banjul directly upriver, taking us to the ancient trading station of Albreda.

After a 15 minute walk we reach the edge of the village of Juffure and the Museum of Slavery before continuing to the original home of Alex Haley's great great grandfather 'Kunta Kinte' which is still occupied by the family. Taking photographs of people may involve being asked for money so always ask first.

Back on board a delicious hot and cold buffet is served, followed by a selection of fresh fruit before continuing our journey to James Island. Steeped in slave trade history, the fortress ruins tells the tale of colonial rivalries and it is possible to imagine the hundreds of slaves shackled together awaiting transport to an unknown and uncertain future. Disembarking from the boat into small boats can be a little difficult but help is on hand from the crew.

On the return journey to Banjul, dolphins often join the boat in the estuary of the river. A cup of tea or coffee completes a memorable day before arriving back at the hotels around 5.30pm.

A Taste of Kombo

A half day trip to experience the local flavour of The Gambia concentrated in the Kombo area.

The day starts at Katchically crocodile pool where we may be fortunate to see ‘Charlie’ the crocodile featured in several British TV programmes. The history of this holy place will be told to you by your guide.

The next stop will be the Botanical Gardens where a variety of African flora and fauna are to be found, a guide is on hand for information and to answer any queries you may have.

Moving on to Bakau Craft Market to see craftsmen at work and an opportunity to buy the exquisite wooden carvings produced. A welcome stop for refreshments will be at one of the local bars where you can buy a Julbrew, soft drink or water.

From here we move on to Serrekunda, the most densely populated town in The Gambia to see the skill and fascinating process of producing tie-dye and batik cottons. Next the hustle and bustle of Serrekunda market where the locals do their shopping from a vast array of goods necessary for everyday life.

On our return journey we will visit the school for the blind before being dropped off at the hotels by around 2pm.

An off the beaten track adventure in either an army style truck or Land Rover which follows the coast of this exciting country and also uncovers the Gambian village way of life. This can be a dusty and bumpy day but is well worth it.

During the day there will be the opportunity to visit some villages and experience the hospitality of the friendly locals. A visit to a village school always proves to be one of the highlights of the day (any contributions of pens, pencils, books etc are always gratefully received by the head teacher). Before lunch we visit a local palm wine compound where you will learn how palm wine is tapped and offered a taste to sample. Lunch is served on one of the unspoilt beaches in the south of the country, followed by the chance to swim and sunbathe.

In the afternoon a further stop at the Tanji museum gives the chance to learn more about traditional Gambian culture. Finally we drive past a typical fishing village before heading back to the hotels.

Unscheduled stops are made during the day to observe the antics of chattering monkeys and hopefully baboons in their treetop playgrounds. Many exotic and colourful species of birds can also be spotted and admired.

Starting around 7.30am with a drive to the International award winning Makasutu Cultural Forest, a forest situated on a beautiful meandering tributary of the River Gambia, encompassing many diverse eco-systems including mangroves, savannah and dense forest.

Senegal Treasure Island

An adventure trip to Jinack Island don't forget your passports (Winter Only).

A full day excursion to the treasure island Janack, taking you through the countryside of The Gambia and neighbouring Senegal.

The day kicks off with an early morning trip to Banjul to experience the hustle and bustle of the port before embarking on the ferry for the 45 minute crossing to Barra on the North Bank of The River Gambia. Fery times can be erratic and are ofton crowded.

After our rendez-vous with our 4WD truck and a quick breakfast stop our journey continues to the short distance to the Senegalise border crossing where you will go through passport control at the village of Bakindakotu. Then after a scenic 30-45 minute we arrive at Janack island where a beach picnic lunch has been prepared for us. We recommend sensible walking shoes and sun hat and protection and try not to use open sandals as the sand can be quite hot.

After lunch there is time to chill out and maybe take a dip in the sea before setting off back to the otherside of the island to catch the boat back for our return journey. We arrive back at your hotel between 6pm and 8pm.

The Sacred Baobab Forest at Makasutu

Makasutu a 500-hectare piece of bush in the Kombo central district of the republic of The Gambia is deemed by some to be a devil's home. They say he is there in the form of a ninkinanko or dragon, and protects the hidden crown and clothes of King Jatta from Busumbala who was killed 200 years ago by the Muslim king Kombo Silla on his way east to take over the country. Jatta's men took the crown and clothes and placed them for safekeeping in the area of Makasutu, now known as the Big Forest.

This skyline of ancient baobab and strangler trees looms over the eastern end of Makasutu and is now under the self-imposed guardianship of Echin, a Jola tribesman.The devil is not the only presence there to ward off encroaching. Along with him are jinns and giants -- spectral creatures that straddle animism and Islam.

They help watch over an Edenesque orchard, which is thought to appear to those with a purity of heart trekking across the land. Mandingo tribesmen tell you in ominous undertones that you can eat the fruit of the orchard while you are in the forest but can never leave with it.

When the Islamic wave came down through the Sahara in the 12th century it gave Makasutu its name, and greater protection from the men who wanted to ravage the bush of timber and wildlife. It became a place of prayer, and so a Mecca (Maka) in the forest (sutu).

It was strictly protected by local kings and marabouts who said that no tree could be felled or animal hunted in the sacred grounds. The land until the turn of the century was used only for godly communion.

Men prayed and boys recently circumcised in the name of Allah were brought to bathe in Mandina Bilon -- a tributary of the main Gambia river that lies five kilometres to the north.

The Bilon brings fish to Makasutu as the tide swells; from its sandy banks grow thick lines of mangroves, and from their grey tentacles the Koran women collect oysters.

As the 20th century moved in Makasutu with its untouched supply of wood and wildlife became a new mecca for the people of Kembujeh and neighbouring villages. It was on the verge of being stripped bare, when in 1992 Lawrence Williams,an architect, and James English, an engineer, came across the land and decided it would make a perfect location for a retreat and oasis for overlanders coming down off the Sahara.

They bought the land from the Sanni family who had ancient ownership rights, and after eight years of fencing and planting thousands of trees the land once again has found a protectorate.Makasutu has become a model for ecotourism in Africa.

Local women continue to grow crops on the western portion, and oyster women come and collect as ever, but now the birds are returning in droves to the trees and baboons stop at the safe haven on their migration route.

Momadou Jeeba, a Jola tribesman, has been manager at Makasutu for the past seven years and revealed that long before Williams and English arrived he and others had dreams that two whites would come by river and settle at Makasutu and keep it from harm -- a myth that has now turned into reality.

Lazy Day Cruise

This is a relaxing and lazy day spent on a 60ft modern Gambian style river pirogue. The boat departs from Denton Bridge, cruising along the oyster creeks and meandering through the tributaries of the River Gambia whilst morning coffee is served – brandy is optional.

You may see local fishermen casting their 'jallo' (huge circular nets) or the oyster ladies in their dugout canoes collecting oysters. But for most people, the real pleasure will be a chance to get a close up view of the aquatic bird life, from Osprey to Pelican.

The boat is anchored in a secluded spot for the chance to have a dip and cool off before a buffet lunch is served. In the afternoon there is a chance to fish and relax before afternoon tea and biscuits is served whilst cruising back to Denton Bridge. There is a reasonably priced fully stocked bar on board.

Six Day Trip

This exciting 6 days gives us the opportunity to show you further into The Gambia and Senegal, with the possibility to see in a genuine African environment how the village people live from day to day, and gives you an insight into the history, beliefs, religion and culture of this region. Add to this the bird and animal life and you will have memories created that will be everlasting.

Day 1
An introductory half day trip around Gambia's capital city and surrounding areas to familiarize everyone with the main places to visit and which may be returned to later if more time is needed for exploration. We start with a visit to the national museum in Banjul showing the history of The Gambia tracing African culture and European colonialism.

We then take a short drive through Banjul to "see the sights," stopping to visit the general market with much hustle and bustle and where anything from live Chickens and Vegetables to Herbs and False Hair can be bought. (As with any crowded place, care must be taken with handbags cameras, etc). We then continue to the tourist market where a variety of souvenirs can be seen.

On the way out of Banjul we stop at the main mosque and a primary school. Then to Sere Kunda the most densely populated town in The Gambia, taking us to a display of "Tie Dye" skills and the beautiful Batik cottons, after which we head for Baku where the first stop will be a local bar where a refresher can be taken at a moderate price, if needed. We are soon away to katchically Crocodile Pool where we may be fortunate enough to see "Charlie" as featured in a recent British T.V. Programme. Lunch at a Beach Bar. (60 km)

Day 2
We start early and proceed directly by road to KWINELLA and TENDABA, passing through various villages on the way. After picnic lunch we take a traditional rivercraft of this Region from Tendaba to explore the Creek areas of the North Bank of the river. Wildlife and birds are all around, but as with all things of nature, you will need to be quick to spot them. We return in time for dinner and overnight with the possibility of some Traditional African entertainment provided by the happy smiling people from a nearby village (175 km)

Day 3
After an early breakfast we take a 4 WD Excursion around the eastern side of KIANG WEST NATIONAL PARK around the area of the hotel with the opportunity to see some of the colourful tropical birdlife for which this area is famous along with Monkeys, Baboons, Bush Pig and maybe some timid Antelope. After time for a quick drink at TENDABA CAMP we continue along the South Bank of the RIVER GAMBIA in the direction of SAPU, where we will take a 4 - 5 hours river trip from the edge of the BABOON ISLAND NATIONAL PARK AREA, heading east along the famous and majestic River Gambia towards JANJANGBUREH.

The boat will take us by various inlets and islands of this fabulous area of nature where most amazing birds including Kites, Rollers, Geese, Fish Eagles, Hornbills, Parrots, Kingfishers, Buzzards, etc can be seen along with Monkeys and Baboons. Often sightings of Crocodiles and Hippos are reported.

Very reasonably priced drinks are available from the bar and lunch is served on board during our cruise up river to our overnight stop at a Camp in the JANJANGBUREH area which is basic but comfortable and beautifully situated close to the river. Villagers from Janjangbureh Island often provide entertainment during dinner. (150 km)
Day 4
At breakfast we are joined on many occasions by monkeys, which always provide a very interesting and exciting start to the day. However care should be taken if you decide to feed them. NEVER use the hand.

We now head west using the laterite bush roads along the South and North Banks of the River Gambia, passing through several villages on the way, many of which do not see the passing of many tourists. Picnic lunch is taken en route. In the late afternoon we reach the Gambia/Senegal border and after the formalities, we continue into SENEGAL for the overnight stop at the basic but clean and comfortable air conditioned African Style Hotel of RELAIS DE KAOLACK situated in the capital of the region.

Dinner and Overnight is at the hotel with possibly some Senegalese Entertainment during the evening. (221 km)

Day 5
After Breakfast, we take the opportunity to make a visit around Kaolack using the age old means of transport of horse and cart. Following an early lunch we continue in a Westerly direction towards Sine Saloum National Park Area.

We arrive at another comfortable air conditioned Hotel on the edge of the Park with time for the fantastic 3 – 4 hours trip by boat to SIPO ISLAND to experience the everyday life of a fishing village. Once again wildlife and birds are all around, but you will need to be quick to spot them. There may even be the opportunity to see the elusive Manatee, that is reputed to inhabit these waters. Dinner and Overnight is at the Keur Saloum Hotel. (40 km).

Day 6
A relaxing morning by the swimming pool is followed by lunch at the hotel after which we continue south towards THE GAMBIA but after approximately 30 - 40 minutes we visit a Senegalese bush village and stop at an estimated 800 years old Baobab tree which is believed to have magical and healing powers. Then back across the border into The Gambia and the hustle and bustle of BARRA ferry terminal, where we take the afternoon ferry that will return us to our starting point 5 days previously in Banjul.

On board the ferry, we can see order arising out of apparent chaos and hopefully the opportunity to spot dolphins during the 30 minutes crossing to the capital of The Gambia - BANJUL on the South Bank of the river. Very often these intelligent mammals will swim alongside the vessel for some time. Once in BANJUL we soon clear the port area and continue to the Overnight Beach Hotel. (70 kms).

Hereafter Senegambia will always have a special place in your heart and an experience to be repeated.

This half day will begin from your hotel, you will then be transported by road on a 20 minute drive the the Gambia is Good Farm. Here you will see their solar cooking project, useing locally made solar cookers that harness the free and abundant amount of sunshine to cook lunches.

This cooking method saves the forest by not useing wood or charcoal as a fuel. This project is funded by the Travel Foundation and trains rural women and the youth in advanced farming techniques. This enables local farmers to implement the planting of a variety of foods and links them to the tourist industry supply chain, who can offer locally growen organic produce all year.

From the GIG farm your next stop will be Kim Kombo. This plantation and wine distillery produces quality liqueurs and you will get the opportunity to tour the facilities to see how it is made and ask questions. You will also be invited to a special tasteing session to sample their delicious liqueurs.

Gambian Bird Watching Tours

Half day trip
We leave the Hotels before sun up in time to be at the waterside to meet the Dawn Chorus at Base Camp on MANDINA BOLONG. A welcoming Tea, Coffee and Biscuits will start the day as we set off in the West African River Craft/Dug Out Canoes to explore the narrow waterways through the mangroves around Kubuneh Island. Tropical birds are all around as we slowly and quietly make our way with the canoe’s exclusive birding guide showing us the wonders of up to 200 different species.

We spend approximately 3 hours probing this fantastic area before returning to land for Brunch at JOYEA LODGE around 10 -10:30.

We round off the morning with a leisurely stroll around neighbouring KUBUNEH investigating the different Bird Habitats around and about.

As the birds retire for their siesta we make our way back to the Hotels leaving this fabulous area of nature in peace until another day.

Wake Up with the Birds

A must fo all bird watching enthusiasts, but equally a wounderful experience for the non-bird watchers crowd.

An early start before sunrise with a drive by mini-bus to Makasutu Cultural Forest arriving at first light at the idyllic base camp. The site is situated on the banks of the meandering Madina Bolong river, an tributary of The Gambia River, where after refreshments you will set off to explore this sacred forest on foot and then off on a traditional dug out canoe to explore the creeks to the accompanying chorus of the water and wildlife.

Both the forest and creeks are a haven for all types of birds and the early bird start is really the best way to experience the dawn chorus in all its splendour. Natural hides and observation platforms are provided close to water holes where birds and wildlife are in abundance.

During your trip you may catch a sight of different rare birds such as White Backed Night Heron, Giant Kingfisher and the African Fin Foot, toname just a few. There are different vantage points to get the best view including the gallery forest, palm forest, savannah, salt flats and mangroves. In addition to the birds you may be lucky enough to get a glimpse of the Baboons, mongoose, civets, genets, crocodiles,and the very rare clawless otter.

Breakfast is a cooked affair prepared by the chefs of the five star Mandina River Lodge. Transport arrives back at the hotel in plenty of time for lunch. Binoculars and copies of Birds of the Gambia and Senegal by Barlow, Wacher and Disney are avaialable on loan free of charge.

We collect you from your hotel and take you to Denton Bridge where the boats leave at 10:00hrs depending on the weather and water conditions. We will troll to catch Barracuda or bottom fishing to catch Threadfin Salmon (captain fish). Red Snapper, Grouper, Cassava, Stingray, Guitarfish, etc. Lunch is provided on board, drinks are for sale. All the boats are fully insured.

Under The Stars

Overnight trip

This is an overnight excursion within the Creeks at Lamin Lodge. It is an opportunity to experience at first hand a night under the African Stars.

Upon arrival the evening programme can be planned from a choice of swimming, relaxing on board, bird-watching, a trip around the neighboring village or most probably joining the Gambian Fishermen in their canoes to bring the dinner in the age old fashion. Casting a net can be a tricky operation!!

Dinner will be BBQ with various salads and the night on deck under the African stars will remain in the memory forever (all mattresses bedding and mosquito netting will be provided).

An awakening to the dawn chorus will be another unforgettable experience. Breakfast is followed by a bird-watching tour in the bush around an area that is very famous among bird-watching enthusiasts. Transportation back to the respective hotels will leave around 09:00.
